Pool Renovations in Pretoria: Restore, Reshape and Upgrade Your Pool the Right Way
Pool renovations in Pretoria, done properly. Crispy Pools restores worn, cracked and outdated pools so they hold water, look new and cost less to run, ready for Pretoria’s long swimming season.
We renovate concrete and fibreglass pools from Pretoria East to Pretoria North. We inspect the shell, surface, plumbing and equipment first, then strengthen, finish, reshape and upgrade only what your pool needs, so you aren’t paying for the same problem twice. Chris manages every renovation on site, we store your treated water in our own bladders with no separate rental fee, and you receive a free written quote with no obligation.
Only the surface needs doing? Our page on pool resurfacing in Pretoria covers that.
Is it time to renovate your Pretoria pool?
Renovation suits pools that are worn, awkward or out of date as a whole. These signs usually point that way:
- A rough, stained or flaking surface that chemicals and brushing no longer improve.
- Cracks that keep reappearing through patches, which means the shell is moving.
- A pool that is too deep or awkward, with a deep end that costs a lot to fill, heat and balance.
- Stagnant corners where algae collects because the water doesn’t circulate properly.
- Tired coping and waterline tiles that make the garden look dated.
- An old, noisy or power-hungry pump and filter.
- A history of earlier work, such as patches that no longer match or a finish that has already been redone.
Renovate, repair or rebuild?
Renovate when the pool is basically sound but worn, awkward or expensive to run. A renovation is a planned project that can cover the shell, the finish, the shape, the surrounds and the equipment.
Repair when one specific thing has failed, such as a leak, an isolated crack or a pump. See our pages on pool repairs in Pretoria and pool leak detection in Pretoria.
Rebuild only when the shell is beyond saving, which is rare. Renovating an existing pool usually costs far less than building a new one.
Whichever you need, one rule applies: we never put a new finish over an unresolved problem. The condition under the existing surface decides the right approach, so every renovation starts with a full inspection.
Our pool renovation services in Pretoria
A renovation runs in a fixed order: strengthen the shell, finish it, then shape and equip it. Here is what the first two stages involve.
Strengthening the shell
Everything sits on the concrete, so we begin there. We grind the shell back to sound concrete, remove failed plaster and cut out fractures. Where the shell has moved, a plaster patch won’t hold. We cut channels across the crack and anchor heavy-duty, high-tensile steel staples into the concrete with structural epoxy resin, tying both sides back into one solid shell. Only then does the new finish go on.
Significant cracking or movement has its own page, structural pool crack repair in Pretoria.
Marbelite Resurfacing
Marbelite is the classic mineral finish, a hand-troweled plaster of crushed marble about 6 mm thick, applied with Cemcrete PoolCrete. The old surface is chipped and keyed so the new plaster bonds. It gives a natural, slightly textured look and suits a sound shell on stable ground. It needs closer attention to water balance than fibreglass and is less forgiving if the shell moves.
Fiberglass Pool Lining
Fibreglass turns a worn shell into a smooth, sealed and flexible one. We laminate layers of glass matting with chemical-resistant resin, using Scott Bader and NCS systems, and seal it with a UV-stable gelcoat. It flexes with the ground, gives algae little to grip and typically lasts 15 to 25 years with sensible care. It works over old concrete shells and can convert a Marbelite pool.
Fibreglass must never be used to hide a structural problem, so any cracking is dealt with first. For a head-to-head comparison and how to choose, see our fibreglass versus Marbelite guide, and for the finishes on their own, our pool resurfacing in Pretoria page.
Fixing dead zones
In many older pools the weir and the returns sit on the same side, so water short-circuits and leaves stagnant corners where algae gathers. While the shell is empty we core-drill the concrete and move the returns to the wall opposite the skimmer. The water then travels the full length of the pool, pushing leaves towards the skimmer and spreading sanitiser evenly.
Coping, mosaic and edges
Worn coping and stained waterline tiles make a renovated pool look unfinished. We replace them with non-slip bullnose stone or quartz coping set flush with your paving or decking, and hand-lay glass or ceramic mosaic along the waterline, which resists scum and scale and frames the new finish.
Pumps, filters and controls
With the pool empty, the pump room is easy to rework, and Pretoria’s long swimming season rewards efficient equipment.
- Variable-speed pumps run slowly and quietly for most of the day and use a fraction of the electricity of an old single-speed pump. Quiet running also helps in estates with noise rules.
- Inverter heat pumps and solar heating stretch the season at a lower running cost.
- Salt chlorinators take the manual dosing out of pool care.
- Digital timers and Wi-Fi controllers let you schedule filtration and lights from your phone.
See our pages on pool pump repair and installation, filtration and hydraulics and smart pool systems.
Reshaping the pool
Once the pool is drained, changing its shape costs far less than building afresh.
- Depth reduction. We backfill a deep end and cast a reinforced concrete floor to a uniform depth of around 1.4 m to 1.6 m. A shallower pool holds less water, so it is cheaper to fill, heat and balance, and it is safer for children.
- A tanning ledge, a wide shallow shelf for loungers and small children.
- Walk-in steps with non-slip edges to replace rusting stainless steel ladders.
- Spa seating and a cover channel where you want them.
- A fresh outline. Dated curves can be squared into a clean modern rectangle, or the pool can be made smaller to give space back to the garden.
Renovating in Pretoria's ground and over earlier work
What is under the finish
Pretoria has a wide mix of pools, from older concrete pools to pools that have already been renovated or resurfaced more than once. The condition beneath the existing finish matters more than the finish itself. Earlier patches, plumbing alterations, movement and cracking all change how a renovation should be approached, which is why we assess before we price.
If an earlier contractor left a job unfinished or a patch has failed, we find the root cause and correct it properly instead of adding another layer on top.
Clay and dolomite: know your plot
Ground conditions vary across Tshwane, and so do their effects on pools. Expansive clay swells in the wet season and shrinks in the dry, working on rigid shells. Parts of Tshwane also sit on dolomite, where geoscience researchers have stated that sinkholes are caused by water getting into the ground. We don’t assume which one you have, because it depends on your plot. We do plan every renovation so that the shell is stable, the finish is flexible where movement is likely and no water is escaping.
If your pool is losing water, find the source before you renovate with our pool leak detection in Pretoria. If the shell has moved, see our structural crack repair in Pretoria.
What we focus on in different parts of Pretoria
Pretoria East and its estates, including Silver Lakes, Woodhill, Mooikloof, Faerie Glen, Garsfontein and Moreleta Park. Estate pools often need a complete modernisation: a full relining, new coping, a ledge or steps and quiet equipment, planned around each estate’s access, security and working-hour rules.
The ridge suburbs, including Waterkloof, Brooklyn, Lynnwood, Menlo Park, Monument Park and Groenkloof. Established gardens often hold older concrete pools, where depth reduction, new circulation and a finish that suits a classic home make the biggest difference.
Moot and Pretoria North, including Montana, Wonderboom, Doornpoort, Villieria and Rietondale. Here we pay particular attention to what earlier work lies beneath the surface, and we deal with the structure first.
How a Crispy Pools renovation works in Pretoria
- Free assessment. We inspect the shell, surface, plumbing and equipment, ask how you use the pool and explain your options in plain English.
- Written quote. You receive a clear, itemised quote and a timeline before anything starts.
- Your water is saved. Where the project allows, we pump your treated water into our storage bladders on your lawn or driveway.
- Preparation. The shell is ground back to sound concrete and the old finish is removed.
- Strengthening and shaping. Steel stitching goes in where the shell has moved. Depth changes, steps, ledges, coping and pipework follow.
- The finish. Marbelite or fibreglass is applied and left to cure.
- Re-commissioning. Your original water is pumped back, so the pool keeps its balance. Chris walks you through the finished job and your written warranty.
Chris manages the work on site from start to finish. You deal with the person doing the work, not a call centre.
How long does a renovation take?
Most standard renovations, including a resurfacing, take 5 to 7 working days. Larger projects with structural repairs or resizing can take 2 to 3 weeks, depending on complexity, the size of the pool and the weather. Your written quote states the timeline for your pool.
Water storage during your renovation: keep your water, avoid the refill bill
A renovation usually means emptying the pool, and many Pretoria pools hold tens of thousands of litres. Sending that down the drain wastes balanced, treated water and leaves you with a big refill bill and a chemical restart.
Crispy Pools owns a fleet of heavy-duty commercial storage bladders. We set them up on your property, store your water while the shell is worked on and pump it back once the new finish has cured. Because we own the bladders, you pay no separate rental fee. Suitability depends on the project, the volume of water and the work involved, and we confirm it at your assessment.
- Your treated water is kept, not thrown away.
- You avoid a large municipal refill.
- Your chemical balance carries over, so there is no costly start-up treatment.
- We pump the water back, so you aren’t waiting on a tap to fill the pool.
Planning your Pretoria pool renovation budget
Renovation prices vary because pools do. Here is how the number is built, so you can judge any quote you are given, ours included.
What moves the price
The size and shape of the pool set the amount of material and labour. The condition of the surface and the shell decide how much preparation and strengthening are needed. Plumbing condition, your choice of fibreglass or Marbelite, any reshaping, new coping and tiling, equipment upgrades and access to the pool then add to or take from the total.
A pool that only needs resurfacing has very different needs from one with structural cracks, leaking plumbing and worn equipment. The best way to control the budget is to rank your priorities, with the shell and the finish first, and extras such as heating or automation as things you can add now or later.
How to read any renovation quote
A trustworthy quote spells things out: what area it covers, how the surface is prepared, which materials are used and in how many layers, what becomes of your water, who supervises, how long the job takes, what the warranty covers and what is left out. Be wary of a figure that is far below the others and light on detail, since a failed finish means paying for the job twice.
For a more detailed breakdown, see our page on pool renovation and repair costs in Pretoria. When you ask us for a quote, we will price Marbelite and fibreglass for your pool so you can compare them side by side.
Why Pretoria homeowners choose Crispy Pools
- Structure first. A good renovation starts with the structure and ends with the finish, not the other way around.
- A builder in charge. Chris personally supervises our projects, so the work you agreed is carried through properly on site. He brings 15+ years of construction and pool renovation experience.
- Real structural repair. We work with cracks, steel stitching and structural resins, including difficult restorations where the shell has to be stabilised first.
- Practical advice. We focus on what your pool needs, and we don’t automatically recommend the most expensive option.
- One team for the whole job. Where needed, we combine resurfacing, structural repair, leak investigation, plumbing and equipment upgrades in a single renovation.
- Proven materials. Scott Bader and NCS resins for fibreglass, Cemcrete PoolCrete for Marbelite.
- Your water stays yours, stored in bladders we own, with no separate rental fee.
- A written workmanship warranty on every project. Ask Chris to walk you through exactly what it covers before you decide.

Pool renovations in Pretoria: your questions answered
How much does a pool renovation cost in Pretoria?
It depends on the size of the pool, its condition, the finish and any reshaping or equipment you add. Minor resurfacing costs less, while structural work and reshaping call for larger budgets. Our page on pool renovation and repair costs in Pretoria shows the detail, and a free assessment gives you an exact written quote.
How long does a pool renovation take in Pretoria?
Most standard renovations, including a resurfacing, take 5 to 7 working days. Larger projects with structural repairs or resizing can take 2 to 3 weeks.
Can you fix a pool that another contractor did badly?
Yes. Many of the pools we work on have been previously repaired or left incomplete. We specialise in identifying the root cause of the problem and correcting it properly, rather than applying temporary fixes.
Will cracks come back after a renovation?
Not if the structural cause is dealt with. We reinforce the shell, with steel stitching and structural resin where needed, before any finish goes on, so the cracks are tied together instead of covered over.
Do I need to drain my pool for a renovation?
Yes. A full renovation needs a dry shell so we can inspect, repair and apply the new surface. Where the project allows, we store your water in our bladders and pump it back afterwards.
Fibreglass or Marbelite: which is better for a Pretoria pool?
Fibreglass is more flexible, lower maintenance and typically lasts 15 to 25 years. Marbelite gives the classic mineral look and typically lasts 10 to 15 years with proper care. If your pool has cracked before, fibreglass is usually the safer choice. If the shell is sound, Marbelite is a good one.
Can you change the shape or size of my pool?
Yes. We can reduce depth, add steps and tanning ledges, fit spa seating, resize the pool or modernise its outline.
How do I know if my pool needs renovation or only repairs?
Ongoing problems such as recurring cracks, a rough surface or repeated leaks usually point to renovation. A single fault points to a repair. We assess the pool and recommend the most cost-effective long-term answer.
What if my pool is losing water?
Find out where it is going before you renovate. Resurfacing over an unresolved leak leaves the problem in place. Our pool leak detection in Pretoria pinpoints the source with pressure testing and gas leak detection.
Do you work inside Pretoria's estates?
Yes. We follow each estate’s contractor access, security, working-hour and noise rules, including in Silver Lakes, Woodhill and Mooikloof.
Is a pool renovation worth the investment?
If the shell is sound enough, usually yes. Renovating costs far less than building a new pool, it ends the cycle of repeated repairs, and a smooth, well-circulated pool with efficient equipment costs less to run.
