Pool Renovations in Midrand: Remodel, Upgrade and Fully Restore Your Pool

Engineering-Grade Pool Restorations Across Midrand

Midrand’s pools range from established family gardens in Halfway House and Vorna Valley to estate pools in Waterfall, Carlswald and Kyalami. When one looks tired, costs too much to run or no longer suits your family, renovation brings it back.

Crispy Pools renovates concrete and fibreglass pools across Midrand. We strengthen the shell, give it a new finish, reshape it where you want a change and fit efficient equipment. Every project is managed on site by Chris, and we store your treated water in our own bladders at no charge.

Only the surface needs doing? Our page on pool resurfacing in Midrand covers that.

Is it time to renovate your Midrand pool?

Renovation suits pools that are worn, awkward or out of date as a whole. These signs usually point that way:

  • A rough, stained or flaking surface that no amount of brushing and chemicals will fix.
  • Cracks that keep coming back after plaster patches, which means the shell is moving.
  • A pool that is too deep or awkward. Many older Midrand pools have deep ends of 2.2 m to 2.8 m that cost a lot to fill, heat and balance.
  • Dead spots in the water where algae collects because the weir and returns sit close together.
  • Tired coping and waterline tiles that make the whole garden look dated.
  • An old, noisy or power-hungry pump and filter.
  • A string of repairs. When you keep fixing the same pool, the money often belongs in a lasting solution.

Renovate, repair or rebuild?

Renovate

  • when the pool is basically sound but worn, awkward or expensive to run. A renovation is a planned project that can cover the shell, the finish, the shape, the surrounds and the equipment.

Repair

  • when one specific thing has failed, such as a leak, an isolated crack or a pump. See our pool repairs page, and if the pool is losing water, start with pool leak detection.

Rebuild

  • only when the shell is beyond saving, which is rare. In most cases, renovating an existing pool costs far less than building a new one.

Whichever you need, we follow one rule: we never put a new finish over an unresolved problem. Every renovation starts with a full inspection, and anything we find is dealt with before the surface goes on.

Our pool renovation services in Midrand

A renovation runs in a fixed order: strengthen the shell, finish it, then shape and equip it. Here is what the first two stages involve.

Strengthening the shell

A finish is only as good as the concrete beneath it, so we start there. We grind the shell back to sound concrete, remove failed plaster and cut out any fractures.

Where the shell has moved, plaster won’t hold. We cut channels across the crack and anchor heavy-duty, high-tensile steel staples into the concrete with a non-shrink structural epoxy resin. The staples carry the load that was pulling the crack open and bind both sides back into one solid shell. Only then does the new finish go on.

Stand-alone cracks and leaks are covered on our repairs page.

Marbelite resurfacing

  • Marbelite is the classic mineral finish: a hand-troweled layer of cement-bound crushed marble plaster about 6 mm thick, applied with Cemcrete PoolCrete. We chip and key the old surface so the new plaster bonds properly.

It gives a natural, slightly textured look and suits a sound shell on stable ground. It needs closer attention to water balance than fibreglass, and it is less forgiving if the shell moves.

Fibreglass relining

  • Fibreglass turns a worn shell into a smooth, sealed and flexible one. We laminate multi-layer glass matting with chemical-resistant resin, using Scott Bader and NCS systems, and seal it with a UV-stable gelcoat.

Because it flexes, fibreglass copes with the seasonal movement of Midrand’s clay far better than a rigid finish. Its smooth, non-porous surface also resists algae and makes day-to-day care easier. It works over old concrete shells, and it can convert a Marbelite pool. For the finish itself in detail, see our page on fibreglass pool renovations in Midrand.

For a head-to-head comparison and how to choose, read our Midrand resurfacing page.

Reshaping: depth, ledges, steps and spa seating

  • With the pool drained, the shell can be reshaped far more affordably than rebuilding it.

    • Depth reduction. We backfill a deep end and cast a reinforced concrete floor to give a uniform depth of around 1.4 m to 1.6 m. A shallower pool holds less water, so it is cheaper to fill, heat and balance, and it is safer for children.
    • Tanning ledge. A wide, shallow shelf for loungers and small children, cast in concrete inside the pool.
    • Walk-in steps poured into a corner, with non-slip edges, to replace rusting stainless steel ladders.
    • Integrated spa seating and a sunken channel for a roller cover, where you want them.
    • A new outline. Curved pools can be squared off into a crisp modern rectangle.

Better circulation

  • In many older pools the weir and the return jets sit on the same wall, so the water short-circuits and leaves stagnant corners where algae thrives. While the shell is empty, we core-drill the concrete and relocate the returns to the wall opposite the skimmer. The water then travels the full length of the pool in a gentle circular current that pushes leaves into the skimmer basket and spreads sanitiser evenly.

Coping and waterline mosaic

  • Tired coping and stained waterline tiles make a renovated pool look unfinished. We replace them with non-slip bullnose stone or quartz coping, set flush with your paving or decking, and hand-lay glass or ceramic mosaic along the waterline. The glazed band resists scum and scale and gives the new finish a clean border.

Equipment upgrades

  • When the pool is empty, the pump room is easy to rework. Midrand’s estates often have strict noise rules, so quiet equipment matters as much as efficient equipment.

    • Variable-speed pumps from Speck and Quality run slowly and almost silently for most of the day, using a fraction of the electricity of an old single-speed pump.
    • Inverter heat pumps and solar heating extend your swimming season at a lower running cost.
    • Salt chlorinators make sanitiser from salt and take the manual dosing out of pool care.
    • Digital timers and Wi-Fi controllers let you schedule filtration and lights from your phone.

See our pages on smart pool systems, filtration and hydraulics and pool pump repair and installation.

Renovating for Midrand's ground, plots and estates

Midrand isn’t one kind of site. The ground, the size of the plot and the rules of the estate change from one suburb to the next, and a good renovation plan changes with them.

Clay pockets: Vorna Valley, Halfway House, Noordwyk, Erand Gardens and Sagewood

  • Heavy clay swells during the summer rains and shrinks in the dry winter, and the pressure on a buried concrete shell is considerable. A shell that cracks under that movement won’t be held together by plaster, because the soil keeps moving. In these suburbs we combine steel stitching on stress fractures with a flexible fibreglass lining that can follow subtle movement without splitting.

Large stands and holdings: Kyalami Agricultural Holdings, Glenferness, Crowthorne, Blue Hills and Saddlebrook Estate

  • Large plots often come with deep pools and long pipe runs. Here the renovation tends to focus on depth reduction, walk-in steps, new return lines and a higher-capacity variable-speed pump sized for the pipework, so the pool is cheaper to run and easier to enjoy.

Gated estates: Carlswald, Waterfall, Kyalami Estates, Waterfall Country Estate and Barbeque Downs

  • Estate pools usually call for a complete modernisation: a full shell relining, new coping, a tanning ledge or steps, and quiet equipment that satisfies HOA noise rules. We plan the work around each estate’s access, security and working-hour requirements, so the project runs smoothly for you and your neighbours.

Water in the ground

  • Wherever you live in Midrand, a leaking pool soaks the soil around it and makes ground movement worse. If your pool is losing water, find the source before you renovate, using our pool leak detection service, so the new finish isn’t put over an unresolved fault.

How a Crispy Pools renovation works, from first message to handover

  1. Free assessment. We inspect the shell, plumbing and equipment, ask how you use the pool and explain your options in plain English.
  2. Written quote. You receive a clear, itemised quote and a timeline before anything starts.
  3. Your water is saved. We pump the treated water into our storage bladders on your property.
  4. Preparation. The shell is ground back to sound concrete and the old finish is removed.
  5. Strengthening and shaping. Steel stitching goes in where the shell has moved. Depth changes, steps, ledges, coping and pipework follow.
  6. The finish. Marbelite or fibreglass is applied and left to cure.
  7. Re-commissioning. Your original water is pumped back in, so the pool keeps its balance. Chris walks you through the finished job and your written warranty.

Chris manages every project on site, from the first grind to final commissioning. You deal with the person doing the work, not a call centre.

How long does a renovation take?

  • A straightforward resurfacing usually takes 3 to 7 working days. A renovation that includes steel stitching, depth reduction, new steps and coping typically takes 7 to 10 working days, and larger remodels take longer. Pool size, the condition of the shell and the weather all play a part, and your written quote states the timeline for your pool.

Free on-site water storage: keep your water, avoid the refill bill

Most Midrand pools hold somewhere between 40,000 and 90,000 litres. Letting that run away wastes mature, balanced water and leaves you with a big refill bill and a chemical restart.

Crispy Pools runs its own fleet of commercial-grade storage bladders. We set them up on your lawn or driveway, store your water while the shell is worked on, and pump it back once the new finish has cured. There is no charge for this.

  • Your treated water is kept, not thrown away.
  • There is no municipal refill bill.
  • Your chemical balance carries over, so there is no costly start-up treatment.
  • We pump the water back, so you aren’t waiting on a tap to fill the pool.

We confirm where the bladders will sit during your free assessment.

Project: a cracked, leaking pool in Vorna Valley

The problem. A pool in Vorna Valley had developed major structural cracks as the clay beneath it expanded. It was losing about 3,500 litres of water a week, and the old Marbelite was badly stained with algae.

What we did.

  1. Stored the pool’s 60,000 litres in our bladders.
  2. Ground out the structural cracks, set steel staples across them and anchored them in structural epoxy resin.
  3. Core-drilled new return jets on the wall opposite the skimmer to remove the dead zones.
  4. Applied a seamless fibreglass lining with a UV-resistant gelcoat.
  5. Fitted a variable-speed pump.
  6. Pumped the original water back in.

The result. The leak was resolved, the water cleared up thanks to better circulation, and the owner paid no municipal refill fees. The work was completed in 5 working days under Chris’s daily management.

Planning your Midrand pool renovation budget

We price each Midrand renovation after a free inspection, because two pools of the same size can need very different work. This section shows how a price is built, so you can sense-check any quote you receive, ours included.

What moves the price

  • Size and depth set the amount of material and labour. The condition of the shell decides how much strengthening it needs. The finish, any reshaping, new coping and tiling, equipment and site access then add to or take from the total. Tight access inside a secure estate can add time compared with an open driveway.

A useful way to control the budget is to split the job into a must-do core, the shell and the finish, and extras such as heating, automation or paving that you can add now or later.

How to read any renovation quote

  • Ask for a quote that lists, line by line, the area being priced, the preparation, the brands and layers of material, what happens to your water, who will be on site, how long the job takes, the warranty and what is not included. A price far below the rest with little detail behind it deserves suspicion, because a finish that fails means paying twice.

For typical rates and worked examples, see our guides to pool resurfacing costs in Gauteng and pool renovation costs in Gauteng. When you ask us for a quote, we will price Marbelite and fibreglass for your pool so you can compare them side by side.

Pool renovations in Midrand: your questions answered

It depends on the size of the pool, the condition of the shell, the finish and any reshaping or equipment you add. Minor surface refreshes cost less, while steel stitching, depth reduction and full fibreglass relining call for larger budgets. Our guides to pool resurfacing costs and pool renovation costs show typical figures, and a free assessment gives you an exact written quote.

Yes. We prepare the Marbelite so the fibreglass bonds to it, repair any structural cracks first and then line the pool. It is a popular choice for owners who are tired of rough plaster and algae.

Cracks that are only plastered or painted over reopen as the soil moves. Cracks that are stitched with high-tensile steel and structural resin are tied back into one shell, so they are far less likely to open again.

No. We store your treated water on site in our bladders at no charge and pump it back after the new finish has cured.
