Why a pool leak is urgent in Midrand
Many Midrand suburbs are built on heavy clay, which swells in the summer rains and shrinks in the dry winter. A leaking pool keeps feeding water into the clay around its shell, so the ground becomes wetter, softer and less predictable, and the shell is pushed and pulled harder than it was designed for.
Leaks are slow and quiet, which is what makes them costly. One Vorna Valley pool we renovated had cracked as the clay expanded beneath it and was losing about 3,500 litres a week. That is roughly 182,000 litres a year, around three times the volume of the pool itself.
Every week a leak runs, it takes more from you:

Is your Midrand pool leaking? Signs to look for
Evaporation alone can lower a Highveld pool by a few centimetres a week in summer. If you notice any of these, something more is going on:
- You keep topping the pool up, and it keeps dropping.
- The water falls to the same level every time and then stops.
- The level keeps falling right down to the floor.
- The pump loses prime, draws air or sounds different.
- The lawn is soggy, paving has sunk or damp patches show near the pool or pump room.
- Water appears at the edge of the property or at a boundary wall.
- A previous repair didn’t solve the problem.

The 24-hour bucket test
A bucket of pool water loses water to evaporation at the same rate as the pool does. A leak affects only the pool. That makes this test a reliable first check.
- Choose a calm day. Fill a bucket with pool water to about 5 cm and set it on the top step, partly submerged.
- Mark the water level on the inside of the bucket. Then mark the pool’s water level on the outside of the same bucket.
- Leave the pump on its normal schedule for 24 hours, with no swimming, no backwashing and no topping up.
- Compare the marks. If the pool has dropped further than the bucket, the pool is leaking.
- Run it again with the pump off. A bigger drop with the pump running suggests a plumbing leak, and a bigger drop with it off suggests the shell, the skimmer or a fitting.
A level that always stops at the same height usually means the leak sits at that height, often at a skimmer, a light or a crack. You can also check your water meter. If it keeps moving with every tap shut, water is escaping somewhere on the property.
If the water falls below the skimmer, switch the pump off. And don’t drain the pool to hunt for the leak, because an empty concrete pool can be pushed up or cracked by groundwater pressure.
How we find a hidden pool leak in Midrand
We don’t rely on a single test. Each method rules places in or out, so the evidence converges on one spot.
Pool inspection
We look closely at the shell, the skimmer, returns, light niches, fittings, pump room and the ground around them. Stains, gaps, damp patches and the behaviour of the pump are all clues.
Pressure testing
We isolate each plumbing line and check whether it holds pressure. A line that loses pressure has a fault, and a line that holds is crossed off the list.
Gas leak detection
Where pipework runs underground, beneath paving or inside a wall, gas introduced into the isolated line escapes at the fault and is picked up by a detector at the surface. It traces buried leaks without digging up the whole run.
Dye testing
A small amount of dye released beside a suspect crack, joint or fitting shows whether water is being drawn out at that spot.
Raised walls and unusual builds
Pools with raised walls or an unusual build hide plumbing and water movement inside the structure. These need patient, methodical investigation, working section by section until the loss is isolated.
Evidence first, then a targeted opening
A hidden leak doesn’t automatically mean breaking up your patio. We narrow down the likely location before anything is opened, so sound paving and finishes are left alone and any opening is made for a clear reason.
Where Midrand pool leaks hide, and how we fix them
Finding a leak is half the job. The other half is repairing the actual fault, so it stays fixed.
- The pool shell. On clay, the seasonal squeeze can crack the floor or walls. We repair structural leaks with construction methods, including steel stitching where the shell has moved.
- Underground plumbing. Suction and return lines under paving, lawn or concrete can fail unseen. We repair or replace the affected section.
- Fittings. Skimmers, returns, light niches and drains are re-sealed or replaced, depending on their condition.
- Raised walls. Pipework concealed in a raised wall needs careful investigation and a repair that respects the structure.
- Pump and filter areas. Leaking unions, valves and seals are repaired or replaced, and we separate them from leaks in the pool itself.
- The surface. Worn Marbelite or damaged fibreglass can contribute to water loss, and we treat it as part of the diagnosis.
Every repair is re-tested before we call the job finished, so you know the loss has stopped.
If the pool has to be emptied
Some leak investigations and repairs need the pool emptied. For suitable projects, we store your existing water in our own bladders while we work. There is no separate bladder rental, and you avoid wasting the water and refilling the whole pool.
When it is bigger than a leak
Sometimes the investigation shows a shell that keeps moving, a surface at the end of its life or a pool that needs more than one fix. We tell you plainly, and we don’t recommend a large job when a targeted repair will do.
