Why a pool leak in Centurion is urgent
Much of Centurion sits on dolomite, a rock that dissolves in water and forms underground cavities. A University of Pretoria study recorded 119 sinkholes in the Centurion CBD area since the early 1970s. Geoscience researchers presenting at the University of Pretoria have stated that sinkholes in Tshwane are caused by water getting into the ground, and a University of Pretoria engineering professor has urged Centurion homeowners to fix leaks promptly.
A pool isn’t a municipal pipe, but it holds many thousands of litres. When it leaks, that water goes into the ground beside your home. Not every Centurion property sits on dolomite, and conditions change from one plot to the next, so you can’t assume yours is fine.

Signs your pool has a leak
A Highveld summer can take a few centimetres a week off the level through evaporation alone. These signs point to something more.
- You keep topping up the pool, and the level still falls.
- The level drops and then stops at the same height every time.
- The water keeps falling right down to the floor.
- The pump loses prime, sucks air or runs noisily.
- The lawn is soggy, paving has sunk or there are damp patches near the pool or pump room.
- Cracks or gaps appear around the skimmer, lights, returns or coping.
- Your municipal water bill creeps up for no clear reason.

The 24-hour bucket test
Evaporation takes water from your pool and from a bucket alike. A leak only takes it from the pool, which makes this free test a reliable first step.
- On a calm day, fill a bucket with pool water to about 5 cm and stand it on the top step so it is partly under water.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket, then mark the pool level on the outside of the same bucket.
- Leave the pump running as normal for 24 hours. Don’t swim, backwash or top up.
- Compare the two marks. If the pool has dropped further than the bucket, you have a leak.
- Repeat with the pump switched off. More loss with the pump on points to the plumbing. More loss with it off points to the shell, skimmer or fittings.
If the water always stops at the same height, the leak is usually at that height, often at a skimmer, light or crack. Also check your municipal water meter: if it keeps moving with every tap closed, there is a leak somewhere on the property.
Switch the pump off if the water falls below the skimmer, and don’t drain the pool to look for the leak. An empty concrete pool can be pushed up or cracked by groundwater pressure.

- The pool structure. Cracks and defects in the shell are repaired with construction-based methods, including steel stitching where the shell has moved.
- Underground and concealed plumbing. We repair or replace the affected suction lines, return lines and pump-to-pool plumbing.
- Fittings. Skimmers, lights, returns and drains are re-sealed or replaced, depending on their condition.
- Pump and filter equipment. Leaking connections, valves and seals are repaired or replaced.
- The pool surface. Surface defects that let water escape are repaired to suit the existing finish.
Every repair is re-tested before we call the job finished, so you know the loss has stopped.
If the pool has to be emptied
Some leak repairs need the pool emptied. For suitable projects, we store your existing water in our own bladders while we work. There is no separate bladder rental, and you avoid wasting the water and refilling the whole pool from the municipal supply.
When it turns out to be bigger than a leak
Occasionally the investigation shows structural movement, failing pipework or a finish at the end of its life. We tell you plainly, and we don’t recommend a full job when a targeted repair will do. Pool leak detection in Centurion: your questions answered
How do I know if my pool is leaking or just evaporating?
Use the 24-hour bucket test above. If the pool drops further than the water in the bucket, it is leaking. A level that always stops at the same height, or a pump that loses prime, also points to a leak.
